A Simple Stitch that started a Movement
On winning the Citi Foundation Micro Entrepreneur of the year award, Friends of Women’s World Banking (FWWB) invited Earthy Goods Foundation to execute a strategic planning and capacity building program for Sadhna, an Udaipur based artisan enterprise. The purpose of the program was to enable Sadhna to take its next leap forward as a high impact social enterprise. The program was structured based on Sadhna’s mission to double artisan incomes and build a strong artisan brand over the next 3 years.
Sadhna was established in 1988 to provide alternative incomes for women in Udaipur’s rural, tribal and urban slum belts. As these communities were not dependent on agriculture, handicraft was introduced to them. They were taught Patchwork, Appliqué and Tanka embroidery skills to earn a secure living. Today Sadhna is a 691 member enterprise known for its exceptional textile kurtas, sarees, home furnishings and accessories. It has an incredible pool of committed and passionate women—both in the management team and in the artisan community.
Earthy Goods Foundation worked with SADHNA’s team to develop their:
- 3 year operating plan
- Key priorities and milestones
- An outcome based marketing plan
- A blueprint for an efficient supply chain
- Clear guidelines for design development
- Tools to monitor financial sustainability
The team continues to be mentored post program.
